Growing up, my father would tell stories of a fictitious relative-Powder River Hughes. According to my father, Powder River lived in the 1870's in the Wyoming Powder River country. He was, of course , the best at everything he did, cowboy, horseman, etc. To hear my father tell the story, the west would have never been won had it not been for Powder River Hughes.

My father is gone now and as a tribute to him, I named my little piece of land the Powder River Ranch.

Located in Northwest Iowa, the Powder River Ranch strives to produce horses that are gentle, smart and with bloodlines that would make them acceptable for a variety of jobs. We just recently added two stallions here- both own sons of the Legendary Zippo Pine Bars. War Leo Zippo (Hef) came to us from a ranch in south central Nebraska where he had been siring ranch horse for his 19 years. Hot Line to Zippo (Jorge) was purchased from Jerry and Danelle Griffith in Georgia where he was being promoted as a pleasure stallion. Both have that wonderful Zippo disposition and should produce foals that will perform. Look for their individual pages soon.

We usually have some young horses available for sale or possibly a trade as well as some brood mares. Occasionally we will have a well- broke horse available, but our primary interest is in the production side.
